HRS heat pumps: capacity and approval checklist

Purchased heat pumps: the current HRS rates

• Enbridge natural gas heating: cold climate air source, $500 per ton, capped at $2,000; ground source, $3,000.
• Electric resistance, oil, propane or wood heating on the Ontario grid: air source, $1,250 per ton, capped at $7,500; ground source, $2,000 per ton, capped at $12,000.
• Rental equipment follows a separate rate: air source up to $2,000 and ground source $3,000. Do not use the purchased-system cap for a rental.

These are program limits, not a quote for your home. The equipment match and qualifying capacity determine the calculation. See the official HRS heat pump rates.

Capacity is part of the evidence

Air source incentives use total rated heating capacity at 8.3C (47F). For the non-gas category, ground source per-ton incentives use closed-loop heating capacity, or open-loop heating capacity for equipment categorized as open-loop only. Do not substitute the cooling capacity in a product brochure or a contractor's shorthand system size for the program calculation.

Before comparing two quotes

• Check the fuel category and purchase versus rental.
• Compare model combinations and qualifying capacity.
• Identify any electrical, duct or backup-heating work outside the equipment price.
• Require pre-installation approval before work.
