Before a deposit

Record your existing primary heating fuel and whether the property meets the program home-type rules. Ask the participating contractor to identify the proposed outdoor unit, indoor unit, air handler or furnace match, and the qualifying heating capacity. A broad brand name is not enough to verify a combination.

Before installation

Have the contractor submit the HRS pre-installation application and wait for approval. Put the approval requirement into the schedule. If the installation date is close and approval has not arrived, resolve that with the contractor rather than assuming the paperwork can be backdated.

After commissioning

• Keep the approved equipment description, final invoice and installation records.
• Check that the invoice reflects the system actually installed.
• Ask when the post-installation submission was made and keep its reference.
• Measure payment timing from post-installation approval, not the day a salesperson gave you a quote.
